"Watching her perform live, Miller has an uncanny ability to keep an audience smiling the entire night – a direct reflection of her humbled stage presence and endearing personality. She’s about as real as they get when it comes to musicians in Seattle." – City Arts Magazine
Seattle-based singer/songwriter Debbie Miller will tug at your heart, cause you to giggle, and make you think twice about crossing her – sometimes all during the same song. Blending humor with heart-wrenching honesty, Miller’s refreshing brand of unique lyrics and playful melodies capture and delight audiences from coast to coast. With song topics ranging from love to bathroom graffiti, Miller’s music oscillates flawlessly between folk-ish tunes on guitar and pounding numbers on the piano.
Miller, a New York native and classically trained pianist who studied under a Julliard alumna for ten years, began her career in the Brooklyn and East Village music scenes. When she was offered her first official gig, Miller was still so new the scene that she didn’t have enough material to fill an entire set. So she wrote more, including the crowd favorite “Snippets From A Bathroom Stall,” (a live version appears on Measures + Waits), resulting in the release of her debut full-length album Fake Love in May 2010.
After moving cross-country to Seattle in 2010, Miller immersed herself in the legendary music scene and has been quickly embraced by West Coast audiences. Miller released her anticipated follow-up EP, Measures + Waits in March 2012, garnering press from City Arts Magazine, AOL Music, Seattle Weekly, SSG Music, PureVolume, and more. Since then, her songs have appeared in independent films, WNYC's Freakonomics, the New Yorker Radio Hour, and TED-Ed.
With quirky lyrics that teeter between honesty, seriousness and silliness, Miller has developed a reputation for her unique live shows, which are sometimes highlighted by her propensity for error. These “Debbie Do-overs” have become fan favorites. “I think it’s because people respond to authenticity and honesty in art and performance,” she said. In order to capture the essence and raw nature of these performances, Miller embarked on recording a live album in the spring of 2015. The project was funded successfully by her fans and supporters via Kickstarter.
Miller's latest album LIVE in an Empty Sea (2016) is available now on iTunes, Bandcamp, Amazon, Spotify, and more. She plans to return to the studio this year to record her fourth album and will be on tour in spring 2017.
House concerts (aka house shows, aka living room shows) are just that - an intimate concert in your home or other space. They are becoming an increasing popular way for artists and fans to connect and share a wonderful experience. And, they don't even need to be in a house! As long as it is a space that can fit minimum 20 people. I've played shows in spaces from one-bedroom apartments to barns.
Anyone - you don't need to be an experienced house concert host to put on a wonderful event, and I can guide you through the entire process.
In a nutshell, you provide the space and invite your friends once we pick a date. Typically I do shows "by donation". For more details on the specifics, check out this handy house concert guide:
""The" Debbie Miller is mesmerizing. The emotional roller coaster that is her act is breathtakingly beautiful. Her emotions are laid bare for all to witness and the next second she has you bursting with laughter. Debbie is kind, thoughtful, and an amazing house guest. “I wish I could write funny and witty and brilliant things like Debbie Miller does, but I can't. So I have to settle for listening to her and seeing her live every chance I get, which, lucky me, has been a lot! And I still love her music and laugh at her beautiful funny songs, and I can't wait to see her live again! Also, she's a stellar human being and if you get the chance to host one of her shows YOU WILL BE SO GLAD YOU DID!!!” - Alana K. (Fillmore, CA)
